Tourists

Although Zeeland is a very popular with holidaymakers, Inter Scaldes is situated away from the major tourist flows. Some are drawn to the wide beaches and others by the historic towns. Guests staying with us for a few days tend to divide their time between the various destinations. To the south-east lies Antwerp and Breughel country, to the north Dordrecht the cradle of what we now refer to as the Netherlands.

Historic Zeeland
Both beautiful Veere with its Scottish Houses and the listed town of Middelburg remind us of the Dutch East India Company. The Delta Works on the man made island Neeltje Jans are also definitely worth a visit. The latter near the storm surge barrier provides an excellent impression of the Netherlands’ battle against the sea occasioned by the great flood of 1953.

Cycling
Zeeland has a cycling network which makes it relatively easy to mark out your own routes. Inter Scaldes is located right next one of the network’s routes. Natuurmonumenten [a nature conservancy organisation] lists a Top 5 of cycling areas in the Netherlands in its Natuurboek and the ’Zak’ of Zuid-Beveland is No. 1! Bicycles can be rented as long as they are reserved in advance.

Hiking
The flower covered dikes of Zuid-Beveland embellish Zeeland’s landscape. There are various hiking routes that run along old, tree-bordered dikes. The routes have been set out to take in places of interest such as the sheep fold, a clog maker’s workshop or special nurseries.

Water sports
Water skiing is permitted in the Westerschelde outside the main shipping channels. The Veerse Meer [lagoon] has special lanes for speedboats and water skiers. Canoeing, jet skiing and cycle by pedal boat, sailing, surfing and sport fishing are other options the area provides. Why not rent an electric boat for a romantic cruise on Zeeland’s waters or sail on a 2-mast clipper.

Gardens
Zeeland is well known for its spectacular gardens. The Open Tuindagen [open garden days] in Zuid-Beveland and Tholen are held during June and July, for further information: www.bevelandsetuinen.nl

Guided tours in Zeeland
Guided tour of Goes along the quays and old town harbour, round Tholen combined with a tour of the flower-filled fields, nostalgic Wemeldinge combined with a cruise, a mussel company and oyster ponds in Yerseke or a tour of the beautiful fruit growing area of Zuid-Beveland including a visit to the fruit growers’ museum are just a selection of the large range of excursions available in Inter Scaldes’ surrounding area.
